Several months ago, I had the wonderful pleasure of interviewing Brittney Castro of Financially Wise Women about her social media efforts. Throughout the interview, she offered some awesome insights
about what it takes to build a strong and successful presence. Check it out!
FSM: How much time must one invest to be successful in using social media for their business?
BC: The answer to this will depend on your goals for using social media. For example, are you using social media to gain creditability, exposure, to gain new subscribers to your email list or clients? For me, I use social media for all of the above, therefore I devote a lot of time to developing a social media strategy, engaging with my community, writing valuable content for my audience and building the systems to convert leads into clients. Just like any marketing, you need to test what works for you. Also, remember, you get what you put into it. So you cannot spend 1 hour a week using social media and expect a lot of success from it.
FSM: If you could give advice to other financial professionals about utilizing social media for marketing purposes, what would you say?
BC: Develop your brand and unique proposition first. This becomes the WHY behind your work. Then become clear on your ideal client and go to the social media platforms they use regularly. If your ideal clients are use Linkedin over Twitter, then spend your time there marketing on Linkedin. Also, remember to provide value. Give it away for free. If you are an expert in your field you will always have more valuable content to share so don’t be afraid to give it away for free.
FSM: What is your favorite social network, and why?
BS: I really like them all. I love to make videos, post things on my Facebook account and love the interactions I have on Twitter. I actually have been spending more time on Twitter lately since I am naturally a “Social butterfly” (thanks Amy!). Like Amy states in her new book, Twitter is like the cocktail party of social media and since I enjoy cocktail parties in real life it makes sense that I enjoy the online version of it too.
